April Language Pattern

Picture

How is a   Hypnotist  like a   Carnival Barker? The magical connection is hidden in the   patter. Coach Rob   emailed with an interesting question last month about the use of the word “patter”    in   Magic Words and Language Patterns. He wanted some clarification and assurance that it wasn’t just a typo, after all, the book is about language   PATTERNS.

The   PATTERNS  are standard forms of influential communication that lead to a beneficial outcome.
You probably already know __________.  [Sends the mind on a search for awareness] You can imagine ___________.  [Directs the mind away from limitations and into possibilities.] If you _________, then _______. [Simple cause and effect allowing the mind to link action to success/satisfaction] Those are just a few examples of strategically using common language to easily persuade or influence.

The PATTER…is what strings it all together. I went to   Dictionary.com    to find a precise definition for the   Coach    and here’s what I   found:

patternoun
meaningless, rapid talk; mere chatter; gabble.  the usually glib and rapid speech or talk used by a magician while performing, a barker at a circus or sideshow, a comedian or other entertainer, a vendor of questionable wares, or the like; stylized or rehearsed talk used to attract attention, entertain, etc.  amusing lines delivered rapidly by an entertainer or performer, as in a comic routine or in a song.  the jargon or cant of any class, group, etc. No need to feel sleazy, read between the lines. The   carnival barker   is a rather good metaphor in this sense. Imagine, as throngs of people are walking down the midway,   the Barker has to keep the patter going to grab the attention of those who might be interested.

For   Hypnotists, the   patter  is OUR jargon for keeping the client connected between suggestions or stories or metaphors or whatever means of influence one is using to facilitate the change. Of course, you can plug your client’s words into a list of   language patterns   and simply recite them and change can occur.

But, most new   hypnotists  go running for scripts to get those   magic words  that connect the suggestions together.

Understand,   the magic is in asking the right questions to move your client into a solution mind-set. Repeating their suggestions back to them gives their mind time to work out any necessary details on the way to success. The   PATTER   (by definition) is the   “mere chatter”   that keeps the connection between   Hypnotist   and   Client. {Salesman    and   buyer   –   coach    and   player –   parent  and   child, etc.} It’s the calm between the “commands” where space is given for the imagination to do the work.

In the video below, you’ll be able to experience the   direct drive of a list of suggestions   and you’ll have a chance to realize   what happens when the patter stops and the connection is broken.

You never have to be the metaphorical fast-talking used car salesman. Even if your approach to hypnosis is slow and rhythmic, be aware that it’s important to keep the connection intact through your   patter. Consistency is important.

Thanks for all of your well-wishes about my hip replacement surgery early in March. I’m proud to say   both hips work now!   I’m already walking my dog and returning to an active life. I’m looking forward to seeing you in-person at a conference or training this year. And this time, I’ll be able to comfortably stand and chat or   walk and talk   to our hearts content!

Happy Easter,   Happy Passover,   Happy whatever-you-celebrate  this month. And when you celebrate anything big or small… do it with all the gusto of Former Pro Football Player Ickey Woods.  (Click here for the Geico   commercial   that illuminates the value of a positive mindset!)
